What a Widebody Kit Actually Is
Unlike a standard body kit (splitter, skirts, diffuser bolted or taped to the factory bumper shape), a widebody kit extends the car's actual width — usually 30–100mm per side — with flared arch panels that widen the wheel arches to accommodate a wider track and bigger wheels. It's a more involved fitment, closer to bodywork than a bolt-on accessory.
Widebody vs Standard Body Kit
- Standard kit: Bolts/tapes to the factory bumper shape. Weekend-fittable, reversible, lower cost.
- Widebody kit: Changes the car's actual width. Often requires paint-matching, sometimes rivnuts or light bodywork, and typically pairs with wider wheels/tyres to fill the new arch width properly.
Is a Widebody Kit Right for You?
A widebody kit makes sense if:
- You want a genuinely different look, not just a sharper version of the factory shape
- You're planning to run wider wheels and tyres anyway
- You're comfortable with a more involved fitment (or having it professionally fitted)
- You're keeping the car medium-to-long term, to make the investment worthwhile
A standard body kit makes more sense if you want a quicker, lower-cost, easily reversible upgrade — most owners get 80% of the visual impact from a well-chosen splitter, skirts, and diffuser at a fraction of the cost and complexity.
Material and Finish
Widebody arch panels are commonly supplied in ABS or FRP (fibre-reinforced plastic) for paint-matching to the car's factory colour — carbon fibre widebody panels exist but are a significant additional cost given the panel size involved.
