Unlike a saloon, the BMW 1 Series is a hatchback — so its rear spoiler sits along the roofline above the tailgate glass rather than on a boot lid. It's still one of the quickest ways to sharpen the back end of your 1 Series, and most owners fit one at home in under an hour with the right prep. This guide covers the full fitting process for our BMW 1 Series spoilers, available in Gloss Black and Carbon Fibre finishes across E81/E87, F20/F21 (pre-LCI and LCI) and F40 generations.
Tools you'll need
- Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or a dedicated panel-prep wipe
- Microfibre cloths (lint-free)
- Masking tape
- Automotive-grade double-sided adhesive tape or panel bonding adhesive (usually supplied with the spoiler)
- A heat gun or hairdryer (helps the adhesive bond in colder weather)
- A tape measure or the spoiler's own mounting guide
Step 1: Check your fitment
Confirm your exact generation before you start — E81/E87 (2004-2013), F20/F21 pre-LCI (2011-2015), F20/F21 LCI (2015-2019) and F40 (2020-2024) all have different roofline and tailgate profiles, and a spoiler designed for one will not sit flush on another. Cross-check the fitment notes on the product listing against your V5C or the chassis code on your BMW's VIN plate. M135i/M140i owners should also confirm they're ordering the correct M Performance-spec listing where relevant.
Step 2: Clean and prep the surface
Wash the roof edge above the tailgate thoroughly and dry it completely. Wipe the mounting area with isopropyl alcohol to remove all wax, polish and silicone residue — any residue left behind will weaken the adhesive bond and can cause the spoiler to lift over time.
Step 3: Dry-fit before you commit
Place the spoiler along the roofline without removing the adhesive backing. Use masking tape to mark its exact position, checking it's centred and level from multiple angles — a roof spoiler that sits even slightly off-centre is far more noticeable than one on a boot lid. This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that prevents a crooked spoiler.
Step 4: Bond the spoiler
Remove the adhesive backing and, working from one edge, press the spoiler firmly into place within your marked guides. Apply firm, even pressure along the full length of the spoiler for at least 60 seconds — a heat gun on a low setting can help the adhesive key into the paintwork, especially in cold weather.
Step 5: Let it cure
Most automotive-grade adhesives reach a workable bond within an hour but need 24–48 hours to fully cure. Avoid driving at speed, using a car wash, or resting anything against the spoiler during this window.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Skipping the IPA wipe-down — wax residue is the most common cause of a spoiler lifting
- Fitting in cold weather without warming the adhesive or panel first
- Not dry-fitting first, resulting in a crooked final position — especially noticeable on a roof-mounted spoiler
- Driving through a car wash within 48 hours of fitting
- Mixing up E81/E87, F20/F21 and F40 fitments — always confirm your exact model and facelift status first
FAQs
Do I need to drill any holes?
No — our 1 Series roof spoilers are designed as a direct adhesive fit using the factory panel, with no drilling required.
Will this fit an M135i or M140i?
We stock M Performance-specific spoiler styles for F20/F21 — check the individual listing to confirm it's the correct fitment for your model.
Can I fit this myself, or should I get it professionally fitted?
Most owners fit this themselves in under an hour. If you're not confident working with automotive adhesives, we'd always recommend a professional bodyshop or detailer for the best long-term finish.
