It's the question almost every first-time buyer asks before ordering a front splitter: will it scrape? The honest answer is that a splitter sits lower than your factory bumper by design, so how you drive matters — but there's a lot you can do to protect it.
Where Scraping Actually Happens
- Speed bumps taken straight-on — by far the most common cause of splitter damage
- Steep driveway entries and exits — especially where the driveway meets a road at an angle
- Kerbs when parking nose-in — easy to misjudge the extra few centimetres a splitter adds
- Uneven car park ramps, particularly multi-storey entrances
How to Protect Your Splitter
- Take speed bumps at an angle. Crossing at 30–45° rather than straight-on gives significantly more clearance to one corner of the splitter at a time.
- Slow right down. Speed makes the car's front end dip further under braking or compression — a slow, steady approach reduces how far the splitter travels toward the ground.
- Choose your splitter profile carefully. A shorter, more heavily radiused splitter clears obstacles more easily than a deep, flat-profile design — worth factoring in if you regularly deal with steep driveways or speed bumps.
- Park nose-out where possible. Reversing into a space means pulling out forward and in control, rather than misjudging the front overhang while parking nose-in.
- Fit splitter guards or rubbing strips on the leading edge, if your splitter supports them — a cheap way to absorb light scrapes before they mark the main panel.
If It Does Scrape
A light scrape on an ABS splitter is usually cosmetic — a light sand and respray sorts most marks. This is one of the reasons we recommend ABS over carbon fibre for splitters specifically: ABS flexes and survives a scrape that would crack or chip a carbon panel.
